Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer announced on Wednesday (May 7) that his government has agreed on measures to guarantee better protection for children in the wake of the Fritzl incest case. Gusenbauer also said Austrian standards were already high, apparently distancing himself from remarks attributed to Justice Minister Maria Berger saying that local authorities had been gullible in their dealings with Josef Fritzl. Fritzl has admitted imprisoning his daughter in a cellar for 24 years and fathering her seven children. Fritzl has also adopted and fostered children. Gusenbauer told a news conference in Vienna on Wednesday: "It is not imaginable for the Austrian government that someone who has been sentenced for a sexual crime would at any point be able to adopt a child. That is not even thinkable. At the same time, people who have been found guilty for more severe crimes should not be able to take a job dealing with children.
