Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer announced on Wednesday (May 7) that his government has agreed on measures to guarantee better protection for children in the wake of the Fritzl incest case. Gusenbauer also said Austrian standards were already high, apparently distancing himself from remarks attributed to Justice Minister Maria Berger saying that local authorities had been gullible in their dealings with Josef Fritzl. Fritzl has admitted imprisoning his daughter in a cellar for 24 years and fathering her seven children. Fritzl has also adopted and fostered children.
