A 73-year-old Austrian who has confessed to locking his daughter in a windowless cellar for 24 years and fathering her seven children appeared before a judge on Tuesday (April 29). Josef Fritzl appeared before a judge in St Poelten, the provincial capital of Lower Austria, on Tuesday, who ordered that police could keep him in detention while inquiries continue. "The latest news is that the judge followed the motion by the prosecution and order detention while awaiting trial after questioning the accused. The accused did not make any statement about the charges brought against him," Dr Gerhard Sedlacek, the chief prosecutor spokesman said. Sedlacek said Fritzl's appearance in court was brief. "According to the judge he appears to be very composed, not emotional whatsoever. The questioning of him was very brief since he did not make any statement or demands," he added.
