Chile ordered hold-out residents to flee from an erupting volcano in the remote region of Patagonia on Thursday and vowed to remove them by force if they refuse to obey. Overnight in Chile, the Chaiten volcano spat out surge of fiery material that flashed over the night sky and saw the full evacuation of all those left behind in nearby towns on Thursday (May 08). The military evacuated a small contingent of troops and journalists still in the village of Chaiten, located just 6 miles (10 km) from the volcano. Residents that have held out until now were also hurried out of their beds as a strong smell of sulphur invaded the town. A court has ordered the complete evacuation of a 30 mile (50 km) radius of the volcano -- an order that gives police permission to use force. But a handful of civilians stayed back in Chaiten and 24 remained in the village of Santa Barbara 12 miles (20 km) from the volcano, well within the evacuation zone, a Reuters reporter who left with the troops said.
