When the social and physical infrastructure of a country is destroyed, children are amongst the hardest hit. Almost half of all people killed in combat during the 1990s were children. Clean drinking water and sanitation are essential for UNICEF's work to keep children healthy. UNICEF's humanitarian work in 33 countries will cost 763 million dollars this year (2005).
