Double amputee runner Oscar Pistorius of South Africa was over two seconds too slow as he run his first attempt to qualify for the Beijing Olympic Games in an able-bodied competition in Milan on Wednesday (July 2). Pistorius, who needed to clock a time of 45.55 to qualify for the Olympic 400 meters, was only fourth to finish the race with a time of 78. The pioneering South African athlete, who runs with carbon fibre blades after both legs were amputated below the knee at the age of 11 months, won the right in May to compete against able-bodied runners at the Games. But the time he needs to clock to qualify is lower than his personal best. "I think I am a bit disappointed." Pistorius said, after the race in Milan.
