The 2007 recording by Beth Rowley is lyrically closer to Nina Simone's reading of the song than most of the others. I suspect the song dates back much earlier than the 1920's - probably at least to the mid 19th Century. Early acapella field recordings have the cadence of a slave work song with simple repetitive verses: "I've got a song I can sing", "I've got a Bible I can read".
