French President Nicolas Sarkozy positioned himself on Monday (June 23) as a possible Middle East peace broker, offering in a speech to Israel's parliament to host negotiations and mobilise French troops if necessary. Since taking office a year ago, Sarkozy has broken rank with his predecessors by repeatedly branding himself a "friend of Israel", fostering closer ties with the Jewish state and repeatedly saying there can be no compromise on its security. After visiting with wife Carla Bruni in the Holocaust museum of Yad VaShem, Sarkozy addressed the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) as the first French president since Francois Mitterrand in 1982. Sarkozy also said peace with the Palestinians was possible if Israel stopped all settlement activity now and accepted Jerusalem as capital of two states.
